I am torn between being furious and crying right now.
In a weight loss community I am in for the super morbidly obese (BMI of over 50), an anonymous new poster showed up stating they are suicidal.
The person said due to their weight limiting their mobility and their extreme depression they are spending the entire day in bed or eating. They are currently thinking of ending their life.
Every person in this group is either currently super morbidly obese or like myself used to be but has lost weight. Some like myself have had bariatric surgery. Others lost weight through diet alone. Either way among the members of the group there should be some understanding of the impact obesity has on mental health. However there was absolutely no replies addressing this poster being suicidal.
What were the replies this person got instead? Every single one of them were people providing their diet tips and sharing how they had managed to lose weight. Granted there is nothing wrong in general with sharing information like this but this person is suicidal and thinking about killing themselves. Providing diet and exercise tips should not be the first thing anyone tells them. Weight loss is not and should not ever be the priority when someone is considering suicide. The first priority should be stabilizing this person’s mental state so their life isn’t in imminent danger.
I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety myself. So have many of my friends and family. It’s not something to be taken lightly. I cried for this person and their hurting and pain. I couldn’t help it. I provided them the national suicide hotline number. I told them to reach out to me if they wanted to. I hope they get the help they need. I am still angry that no one else bothered to suggest they get help for contemplating suicide.
